Walking up M Street in Georgetown there a many unique restaurants in which to eat. J. Pauls is one restaurant that has been a Georgetown institution for many years.

As you walk into the restaurant you will notice the dining room to your left, and the bar to your right. There is another dining area at the back of the restaurant. I personally like the bar the best.

J. Pauls is a great place to go hang out. They have two televisions in the bar and a lot of places to sit. Unfortunately on Friday and Saturday nights there are more people than chairs, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. During the warm weather the front windows (which are more like huge doors) in the bar are opened so that you have the feeling of being outside without actually being outside.

This bar attracts the Georgetown University crowd, staffers, tourists, business people, and occasionally celebrities, creating a rich environment for people watching.

On the walls in the bar are pictures of the area from the 20s and 30s, including pictures of old gangsters. At the bar you have access to the same menu as you would in the dining rooms. The fare includes pub food -- burgers, and potato skins, buffalo wings and nachos. The menu also includes other fare including: a crab cake platter, filet mignon, ahi tuna au poivre.

One thing that is worth trying if you have not done so is a sampling of oysters. J. Pauls has an interesting assortment that they draw on, and each oyster has its own unique flavor -- yes they really do taste different.

I love this place and continue to go back year after year.
